Training & Certification · Buyer’s Guide · 2026
Damp proofing training is a genuine investment — of money, and of the professional reputation you’ll build on it. But courses vary enormously, and the sales pages all say the same things. Here are the six checks that actually separate them, from the body whose job is raising the standard — including how to check us.
Why it matters this much: damp is one of the most misdiagnosed problems in UK property. Condensation gets sold rising-damp treatments; building defects get blamed on lifestyle. Every wrong diagnosis traces back to how someone was trained — so the course you choose isn’t just your credential, it’s the quality of every survey you’ll ever do. If you’re still deciding whether the career itself is right, start with our honest take on whether damp surveying is a good career, then come back.
The six checks, in order of importance
Who externally checks the training?
The single biggest divider. Anyone can write a course and issue a certificate for it — the question is whether anyone outside the provider has assessed the training’s quality. Our FODCS surveyor and FODCT technician certifications are independently City & Guilds Assured — externally quality-checked by the UK’s leading skills certification organisation — and the surveyor training is CPD certified. Whatever route you consider, ask this question first and expect a specific, checkable answer. For how the routes differ more broadly, our honest comparison of legacy and independent training routes sets out the full criteria — including what established routes do well.
Read the curriculum, not the sales page
A credible damp course covers: all the types of damp and how to tell them apart; moisture readings and — crucially — their interpretation; building pathology, so you understand how different constructions fail; report writing, because the report is what clients pay for; and the current legal context, including Awaab’s Law. Two warning signs: a curriculum built around one treatment method (you’re being trained to sell a product, not diagnose a building), and no mention of reporting at all. For a full module-by-module example, see the FODCS course syllabus.
Who actually teaches it?
Theory can be compiled from textbooks; judgement can’t. Training built and delivered by practising specialists — people who still survey real properties — carries the case studies, the edge cases and the “here’s what the meter won’t tell you” knowledge that makes you useful on site. Ask who wrote the course and whether they still work in the field. Federation of Damp courses are built by practising specialists around the FOD 7-Step Survey Method — the same method every member works to.
Pick the format you’ll actually finish
Self-paced online suits people training around a job — the FODCS Online certification runs roughly 15–20 hours, done whenever suits. Classroom suits people who want hands-on time and live questions — the 2-day FODCS Classroom course. There’s a blended pathway if you want both. The honest guidance: the best format is the one you’ll finish — an incomplete classroom booking teaches less than a completed online course. Our full online vs in-person comparison goes deeper.
Compare true cost, not headline price
Four questions expose the real number anywhere: Is the exam included, and what does a resit cost? Are materials extra? What will travel and accommodation add to a classroom course? And are there ongoing fees to keep the credential recognised? Then check whether CITB funding may apply before paying full price. For exact Federation of Damp prices and precisely what’s included — published openly, no form-filling — see our transparent training cost guide.
Ask what happens after the certificate
The question almost nobody asks, and the one that determines whether the training pays back. A certificate alone leaves you qualified and unfindable. Check whether the route leads anywhere: with the Federation, certification makes you eligible for membership — a verified listing on the public Find a Specialist register where homeowners, landlords and lenders actually look, the vetted-member badge, accountability to a Code of Conduct that makes your listing worth trusting, and member tools including the branded survey report builder. That’s the difference between holding a credential and being in business with one.
Run us through all six — please
We publish this list knowing it will be used on us, and that’s the point: City & Guilds Assured certification you can verify externally; a curriculum covering diagnosis, pathology, reporting and Awaab’s Law; courses built by practising specialists on the 7-Step Method; online, classroom and blended formats; prices published openly with CITB funding where eligible; and a register, membership and member tools waiting after the exam.
And the honest caveat we’d rather you hear from us: if a specific employer asks for a specific legacy qualification, check that job advert before choosing any training — ours included. The right course is the one that fits where you’re going.
