If you’re weighing up training routes into damp surveying, you deserve a straight answer rather than a sales page. So here’s how we’ll do this: no competitor named, no claims you can’t check yourself, and an honest note on what established routes do well. Just the things that are verifiably different about training with the Federation of Damp — and how to judge any provider, including us.
How to judge any training route — ours included
Strip away the branding and every damp training route should be judged on five things: who checks the quality of the training (external assurance or the provider marking its own homework); whose interests shape the curriculum (independent teaching or content influenced by product sales); whether the format fits a working life; what happens after the certificate (a route to clients, or a PDF and a handshake); and who holds you accountable afterwards — because accountability is what makes a credential mean something to the public. Run any provider through those five. Here’s how we answer them.
Six differences you can verify
1. Independently City & Guilds Assured certification. The FODCS surveyor and FODCT technician certifications are independently City & Guilds Assured — externally quality-checked by the UK’s leading skills certification organisation — and the surveyor training is CPD certified. That’s not our opinion of our own training; it’s an external check you can verify.
2. Independence from manufacturers. The Federation takes no funding or direction from product manufacturers, so the curriculum has no product to sell. That matters more in damp than almost any trade: an industry problem for decades has been diagnosis shaped by what the diagnosing company installs. Our training is built the other way round — evidence-led diagnosis first, on the FOD 7-Step Survey Method, whatever the fix turns out to be.
3. A format built for people who already work. The FODCS Online certification is fully self-paced — roughly 15–20 hours of study, done around your job, no travel and no time off site. Prefer in-person? There’s a classroom certification and a combined online-and-classroom pathway, and complete newcomers can start with the Level 1 beginner course. On cost: compare total prices yourself — ours are on every course page — and note that CITB funding may apply for eligible learners.
4. A route to clients, not just a certificate. A qualification that ends at the certificate leaves the hardest problem — being found and trusted — entirely to you. Certify with the Federation and you’re eligible for membership: a verified listing on the public Find a Specialist register that homeowners, landlords and mortgage lenders can check, a member badge with certificate verification, and professional tools including a branded survey report builder. The 200+ professionals on the register today are findable by postcode — that’s the difference between holding a credential and being in business with one.
5. Accountability the public can rely on. Members are held to a Code of Conduct, with a genuine complaints and redress process behind it. That protects homeowners — and it protects you, because it’s precisely what makes your listing worth trusting. A standard nobody enforces is a logo; ours is enforced, which is why a live register listing means something a years-old certificate can’t.
6. Recognition where the work now is. The strongest evidence isn’t what we say — it’s who trains with us. Federation of Damp diagnostic training has been delivered to local authorities and housing providers including Newcastle City Council, Manchester City Council, Thanet District Council and the London Borough of Hillingdon — the sector where Awaab’s Law has made competent, documented damp diagnosis a legal requirement, with Phase 2 widening it from October 2026. With 650+ professionals certified to date, that’s the recognition that turns into work.
And the honest bit: what established routes do well
Longer-established routes have history behind them, and some employers — particularly older remedial firms — know those credentials best. If your goal is a job at a company that specifically asks for a particular legacy qualification, check that job advert before choosing any training, ours included. We’d rather you pick the right route than pick us for the wrong reasons.
Where the Federation is strongest is where the industry is heading: independent, evidence-led diagnosis; verifiable trust for homeowners and landlords; the housing sector’s compliance-driven demand; and training that fits around a working life. If that’s the career you’re building, the comparison above is the case — every line of it checkable.
